Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Peter Robert states: "The DeLanceys are striving their utmost to make our famaly ridiculous and to keep them out of all Posts of Honour Profit and are determined to oppose every thing and every Body that they support which is too hard to bear I could wish you lived here one year to judge of their carrying on-." He also makes arrangements to sell a enslaved person that has misbehaved.
