Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

John Dings, Geret Braun, Jury Strider, and Addam Husenrought inform Robert, Jr. that they have sent him Peter Hermonus "who is so Crasey that we dare not Trust him with his wife & Children, he raves night & day Jumping about & throughing fire so that it's impossable we Can keep him here any Longer without haveing some mischeif done to his wife Children or self."
