Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

James Duane writes that his sister-in-law Catharine and her husband John Patterson are glad that Robert, Jr. has permitted them to visit him. He explains that Patterson has hope of financial recovery, and "he is by no means destitute." Duane also informs Robert, Jr. of the farms that he has sold.
