Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Stevenson explains that he has been slow in repaying his debts due to hard times and the scarcity of money. However, he notes that he is hopeful that the particularly fine quality of the crops at the moment will change his situation, and he therefore requests that Robert, Jr. extend him some more credit.
