Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A Committee of Congress, including Samuel Adams, Richard Henry Lee, and William Whipple (the remaining 2 signatures are illegible due to damage), write to Robert, Jr. to request "Cannon and Stores" needed by General Schuyler to supply his Northern Army. They have therefore sent Coll. Stuart "who will lay before you a List of such Cannon and Stores as are wanted; which we hope, may be procured on just and equitable Terms, and timely enough to be transported to General Schuyler before the Winter."
