Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"The bare attempt [of Congress] to adopt the State Debts will have an effect on the price of State Securities as many people will Speculate in them, especially as the Continental Debt has risen in price beyond their expectation and it now requires a large Capital to purchase any considerable quantity of that kind of paper." Walter also discusses a forthcoming legal action against Chancellor Robert Livingston (1746-1813).
