Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Apparently written by a friend of Johnston's from New York. Howard informs Johnston of various social activities he has engaged in and gives news of mutual childhood friends. He also writes that a fancy hotel just opened on Fulton Street, and seems to be quite successful. Address leaf on p.4.
