Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

William A. Livingston & Co. Agreement to purchase a business from William F. Harndan & Co.

The document declares that the business partners William F. Harnden and Dexter Brigham, Jr. have agreed to sell their express line between New York and Philadelphia to William A. and Johnston Livingston. According to the agreement, Harnden & Co. will turn their offices over to the Livingstons, and are also expected to encourage the continued patronage of the express line.
