At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Autograph manuscript signed. Diary in pencil. Writes about camp life and the weather. Notes the number of letters he writes and receives in a day. Approximately 112 pages.

Enlisted in the Union Army on 29 February 1864 as a Private. On 28 April 1864 he mustered into "I" Co. Illinois 77th Infantry. He was transferred out on 7 July 1865. On 7 July 1865 he transferred into Illinois 130th Infantry. He was mustered out on 25 August 1865.
