Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One diary for the year 1863 by Hiram C. Wells. The diary gives a good view of life in the cavalry with skirmishes, scouts, etc. Well's regiment took part in the siege of Knoxville. Wells was later captured, imprisoned at Andersonville, and on the Sultana when it exploded.
