At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Buchanan also politely declines to read Sipes' manuscript. He claims that the materials for a biography would have to come from himself in order to be accurate. Also, "an eminent literary friend offered to write my Biography & I gratefully accepted the offer, in case I should deem this necessary."
