Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Born in Alabama, Birney and his older brother, William Birney, were sons of anti-slavery leader James G. Birney, thus joining the Union side. Ohio-educated Philadelphia lawyer, served with his three-months regiment in Patterson's army until mustered out on 31 July 1861. The regiment reorganized for three years and he fought as brigadier at Seven Pines. At Gettysburg he commanded the corps and later joined the 2nd Corps. In October 1864 he went home suffering from malaria, where he died.
