Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

States that he is receiving countless letters on the subject of the currency. Agrees that banks are quite powerful, "in truth they are the throne," and the banks have a hand in Congress and control over newspapers, but concludes that "this can't last always."

Francis Spinner was the Treasurer of the United States from 1861-1875.
