Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Records the receipt of ordnance from the armory in Springfield, Massachusetts "for the frigate building in Boston for the United States" (the USS Constitution), which Captain Ingraham promised to deliver to Henry Jackson.

Henry Jackson was a Massachusetts Revolutionary officer and, at the writing of this letter, a navy agent supervising the construction of the USS Constitution.
Captain John Bryant was the Deputy Commissary of Military Stores at the Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts.
