Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A list of the enslaved people hired out from the estate of Thomas Winn. Lists names of the enslaved people and those who hired them, as well as dates and prices. Lists enslaved people hired out from 1825-1837. Notes that some of the accounts have been settled or remain unsettled. Signed by Winn on the first page. Docket notes that Thomas Winn died 16 November 1824, that infant named Suzy was born 14 August 1823 and died one year later, and that an enslaved person named "Old Phebe" had died.
