Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly intended for George Richard Lunn, who served as United States Representative from New York 1917-1919. Lane congratulates Lunn on his recent unspecified victory (possibly his election to the House of Representatives), stating "it is good to know that we shall have your help in carrying on the good work." Typed on Secretary of the Interior stationery.

Lane was Secretary of the Interior 1913-1920.
