Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Richard to his brother Henry. Sends $20 to reduce the debt owed to Henry to $150. Mentions two mutual friends - one who is in a religious order and another who is about to join. Mentions that lectures have started and that "V.B. and myself have 20 private pupils." Henry was at 91 W. 9th St. in New York City. Letter is faded from what appears to be water damage.
