At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The document appears to be a teacher's contract between teachers and the director of a school. The contract applies to the townships of Eckford, Clarendon, and Fredonia, Michigan. The contract is between Franklin W. Fuller and the school districts: Fuller agrees to teach at the primary school for four months starting 26 November 1855. He will be paid 23 dollars a month according to the contract. The contract also details on what days he will teach and which holidays he will receive.

Franklin W. Fuller from Howard, Illinois enlisted on 14 August 1862 as a Sergeant. He mustered into the I Company of the Illinois 74th Infantry on 4 September 1862. He was mustered out on 10 June 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee.
