Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A. P. Kessler, the father of Thomas J. Kessler, writes to his wife. Informs her to visit all of their friends and to let him know a few days in advance when she is ready to come home. Comments that they will kill and roast a turkey for her return. Instructs her where they will meet her. Writes that they had a good Thanksgiving dinner that was put on by the "Union Leak" [League] for the benefit of war widows. Relays a story about a young man who was injured from the mill. Discusses various townspeople and family members.
