Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Contract between William Remington and Hugh Dawson for graveling a street. Details the costs and certifies that Dawson received payment. Note on second page dated 7 October 1867 states that Remington paid $55, his portion of the account. With 2 cent U.S. inter revenue stamp on first page.
