Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Consists of two envelopes addressed to William Remington, two separate pages with notes, one piece of a map showing streets and property lots (possibly in Baltimore), half of a lease document, and two notecards pasted together with a summary of a story about Medora, marked "Medora by Grenough, Boston 1883." Possibly referring to a sculpture by Horatio Greenough titled, "Medora."
