Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This document approves the appointment of Joseph Jones Reynolds to Major General of Volunteers by Abraham Lincoln and President. Edwin Stanton countersigns as Secretary of War. Decorated by engravings at the top and bottom of the document which were done by J.V.N. and C.H. Throop. Accompanied by a blue paper seal. Docketed the same date.
