At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Financial document signed by Ellsworth as a member of the Connecticut Pay Table Committee. The committee was responsible for Connecticut's finances during the Revolution. To Connecticut Treasurer John Lawrence. Payment of four pounds, 18 shillings, and eight pence is for Simeon Brooks and Giles for delivering saltpetre. Note, signed by Cornelius Higgins, says the payment was received. Another document signed, signed by John Treadwell, says the payment was audited on 1 September 1777.

Treadwell was elected to the Continental Congress in 1784, 1785, and 1787, but did not attend. Elected Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut 1798-1809; Governor of Connecticut 1809-1811; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1818.
