Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Promissory to to Elias Carrington for twelve schillings and three pence for caring for a sick soldier while on furlough. Also signed by John Lawrence as Treasurer. Verso signed by Samuel Peck, stating he recieved the money.

John Lawrence was the treasurer of Connecticut.
Thomas Seymour held the rank of colonel and was the first mayor of Hartford, Connecticut.
