At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Volume three of a series entitled, "Information respecting the history condition and prospects of the Indian tribes of the United States," published in 1853. Contains the results of a study commissioned by Congress to collect statistics on the condition of indigenous peoples of the United States. The contents of this volume is divided into thirty one parts. The first eighteen section concern the history to date of various tribes. The other thirteen sections are; Hostile Attitude of the Southern Tribes Previous to their Final Removal; Consummation of the Government Policy of Removal; Principals Contended for by the Indians During Three Centuries; Present Condition and Prospects of the Tribes; Causes and Decline of the Indian Tribes; Indicia from their Ancient Status and Archeology; Indicia From Manners and Customs; Indicia From Mythology and Religions; Indicia from Language; Statistics Tribal and General; Desiderata Respecting the Mental Character of the Indians; Historical Notes on the Origin of the American Tribes and Their Ethnography; Indian Policy and the Indian Future.
