Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Typed letter on Navy Department stationery. Signed by Long as Secretary of the Navy. Written to Walker as a retired Rear Admiral. Orders him to report immediately by letter to the Secretary of War for duty "as a Naval Member of a Board organized for the purpose of recommend, to the Secretary of War, the width of draw or pivot spans in a bridge" across the Niagara River. Docket, signed by Walker, says he reported by letter on 29 July 1898. Address of Walker typed at the bottom: 1202 18th Street, Washington, D.C.
