Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked as number 449. Certificate says West has been registered as an approved shipmaster with the American Ship Masters' Association. Signed by 5 council members of the association. Also signed by 2 examiners, one in nautical science and the other in seamanship, that he passed the tests necessary for registration. Endorsed by the association's secretary on 17 May 1867, seemingly extending his registration for another year. An association stamp over the secretary's name is dated 1 June 1867.
