At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Three volumes of diaries belonging to Ronald A. Kennedy dated 1862-1865 related to battles, and finances of I Company of the 3rd Vermont Infantry during the Civil War.

Ronald A. Kennedy enlisted in June 1861 in Vermont and was mustered into I Company of the 3rd Vermont Infantry in July of that year. In February 1865, he was commissioned into the Vermont 5th Infantry and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
