At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from Headquarters, 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Corps. Informs Captain [Mervin?], Assistant Adjutant General, that he was appointed Brigadier General, as informed by a letter signed 17 August 1863 by Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War. Resigns as Colonel of the 44th Regiment, New York Volunteers to accept the appointment.
