Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses balls, dramatic representations, and social meetings in camp: the first officer's ball of the season occurred last week, but soldiers' balls occur two or three times per week; dramatic representations occur twice weekly; social meetings occur nightly; and there is plenty of food. Mentions that he attended three women in labor the day before.

Moore was an army surgeon on duty during the Utah War, 1857-1861. Kelly was Moore's sister.
