Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Fragment of banquet program, probably for a celebration following the victory of the Civil War. Sherman presided. Poems, songs, and reports given for each army. Verso has illustration of Union flags with lists of victories. On May 24 a Grand Review parade displayed all troops in Washington, D.C.
