At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from Headquarters, Department of the Tennessee, near Vicksburg, Mississippi. Grant orders Admiral Porter to direct the Marine Brigade to debark at Haynes' Bluff, Mississippi, and to send as many steamers as possible to obtain reinforcements from Memphis, Tennessee.

Porter commanded the Mississippi River Squadron during the Vicksburg campaigns 1862-1863.

Near Vicksburg, May 31st 1863,

Dear Admiral,
Will you please direct the Marine Brigade to debark at Haine's Bluff and send all their steamers, or as many as possible, to Memphis to bring down reinforcements. I have ordered the troops but it is a difficult matter to get the transportation.
I would specially request that any of these steamers that can be spared be got off at the earlyest possible moment.
