At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lieutenant Guthrie's field notes kept while serving as acting Adjutant to Forsyth during an expedition against the Apache Indians in New Mexico. Describes pursuit that left from Fort Cummings and battle with Geronimo during the spring of 1882. Title from envelope.

April. 18t 1882. left Ft Cummings at 9.45 am, Genl Fosyth, Capt Davis, Lieuts Guthrie, Mason, Wheeler & I care, Dr [inserted: Coikery] present. Troops F & H, 4" car, 1 man Co 'A' 13" Inf present. Kept Bayard road for 10 miles turned to left across country to Mimbres River, distance [illegible] about 22 miles. Amid in camp 4.10. pm.
