Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Perez writes to the mayor of Santa Clara to announce the victory of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna over the rebels at Zacatecas in Mexico. Hopes he will send forth congratulations for this glorious event. Perez became Governor of New Mexico in 1836 and was decapitated in 1837 for trying to impose taxes from Santa Anna.
