Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Captain Brathwait of the ship Centurion in Cape Cod Harbor. Tells Burgoyne that he has arrived with orders of General Sir William Howe for the Men of War and transports with provisions on board them to return to Rhode Island. Says he will proceed without the loss of time. Postscript says Captain Dalyrmyple sends his compliments. Docketed by Burgoyne.
