At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. Bound with three rare pamphlets: "Draught of a Fundamental Constitution for ... Virginia", "An Act for Establishment of a Money Unit..." (normally attributed to Jefferson), "An Act for Establishing Religious Freedom, Passed ...1786." Edmund Randolph's copy with his signature on the first page of text, his personal table of contents before the titlepage (including two citations to "Slaves" and "Slavery" in the book) and annotations in various places (mostly glosses; only one note is substantive: adding the Osprey to Jefferson's list of birds). Other notes in pencil seem to be ca. 1822 (see p. 9). There is also a Civil War-era note on the rear free endpaper concerning Edmonia Preston, granddaughter of Randolph, who was robbed by Federal soldiers who left her with only a "single garment made of an old quilt."
