A train carrying Lincoln's coffin departed from Washington, D.C. on April 21, 1865. Headed to Springfield, Illinois, where the President would be buried, the train stopped at various cities along the way so that his coffin could be placed on horse-drawn carriages and led through the streets for public viewing.
