One undated photograph of Union Major General George Henry Thomas. Image is of his right profile. See GLC00556 for another portrait view of Thomas.

Thomas had been promoted to major general of volunteers on April 25, 1862. He earned recognition at the September 20, 1863 Battle of Chickamauga, having firmly held his ground against a strategic Confederate advance that sent the majority of other Union troops retreating. Although the Union Army ultimately lost the battle, Thomas's heroic stand earned him the nickname the "Rock of Chickamauga." He was soon after made a brigadier general in the Regular Army on October 27, 1863.
