Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph showing two trains running on tracks through a railroad depot near Vicksburg, MS. Title taken from inscription on recto. This depot is on the Vicksburg & Jackson line. Until Gen. Grant cut off the rail link, this was the destination of the supplies the Confederates stockpiled to resist the Federal seige. Stamp of French & Co. on recto. On verso graphite inscription reads "RR depot" and is stamped "Kean Archives, Phila."
