Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of a camp of Confederate soldiers near Vicksburg, MS. Title taken from inscription on recto. Stamp of "French & Co., photographers, Vicksburg, Miss." Soldiers visible throughout camp, some in small formations, others standing individually. Entrenchments and shebangs are visible in the foreground. Soldiers' barracks in background and river is visible to the left. The 20th Mississippi was stationed at Vicksburg for most of the siege.
