Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Title taken from inscription on recto. Huge signal tower built by General Benjamin F. Butler with a signalmen standing on various levels and several men posed in front of it. Modern graphite inscription on mount suggests the photo was taken by J. Reekie in 1862 ca., although a similar picture taken from different angle appears in the Photographic History of the Civil War, Vol. 2, p. 439, states the photograph was taken in June 1864.
