Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of Union cavalrymen and their officer. None of the troopers wear any discernible insignia. Officer is at center-left sitting on the only chair present. His jacket displays The elbow of a fourteenth man is visible on the left hand side of the photograph. The trooper sitting on the far left wears the regulation trousers with a thin blue stripe running down the outer seam.
