Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

With a rubber stamp "12256." With ink numbers on the mount keyed to a description on back listing everyone: 1. Capt. Conklin, AQM; 2. Lt. Col. Cox, C.S.; 3. Lieut. Knox commissary of muster [?]; 4. Lt. Col. W. T. Clark AAG; 5. Capt Gile [?] aid de Camp; 6. Capt Hickenlooper, Chief Engineer; 7. Major General McPherson; 8. Major Boncher Medical Director; 9. Capt Steele aid de Camp; 10. Major Willard, aid de camp & Picket officer; 11. Col. Strong, acting Inspector General. McPherson became the only Union Army commander of the war to die in battle--he was killed in the Battle of Atlanta in 1864.
