Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Maquette comprised of 7 cartes de visite of Union Army generals who served in the American Civil War and 2 separate oval pieces of scalloped paper inscribed with the words "Generals of" and "Departments." Each carte de visite is pasted on scalloped paper. Produced by Mathew Brady's studio to be photographed and published in a reduced size as its own carte de visite. Each general's surname is written in ink directly under his image. They include William S. Rosecrans, John G. Foster, Nathaniel P. Banks, Franz Sigel, Benjamin F. Butler, Quincy Adams Gilmore, and David Hunter.
