Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Union General John Grubb Parke is seated in the center and is surrounded by 4 Union officers. Parke assumed command of the Union Army's IX Corps in 1863. On the far right sits Charles Greely Loring, Sr., who served as the inspector general of the IX Corps. Each officer's surname has been penciled in beneath his image. The name furthest left has been almost completely rubbed away.
