Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Same image as #612 but the print is cut smaller. The image shows the interior of the earthworks at Petersburg. There is a now roofless wooden structure in the foreground next to the ruins of a chimney. A man in civilian clothes is visible just left of the center of the image. The numbers "1071" and "386" do not appear in this image- that part has been trimmed off. There is a notation of "1071" written in the lower left corner of the image. Formerly part of H.W. Fay's (keeper of Lincoln's tomb) scrapbook.
