Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image is a small vignette print of Abraham Lincoln. The print was with a letter (5111.01.0525) from F.H. Meserve to Dr. Warren of the Lincoln National Life Foundation dated 01/19/1942. Inscription on verso in Meserve's handwriting reads: "Bought from the War Department in 1911. F.H. Meserve." Numeric notation on recto: "86."
