Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Inscription on verso: "War Views. A Dead Rebel Soldier, as he lay in the Trenches of Fort Mahone, called by the soldiers 'Fort Damnation.' This soldier must have been killed by a fragment of Shell, that exploded close by, as he is covered all over with mud and blood. This view was taken the morning after the storming of Petersburgh, Va., April 2d, 1865 No. 3190." Numeric notation on verso: "80."
