Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows a train stopped to unload supplies at a loading dock, a fenced yard in the foreground with numerous stray wagon wheels leaning against the fence, and many wagons and horses in front of some larger buildings in the background. Inscription on verso: "Gardner." Numeric notation on verso: "528" and "IV."
