Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows the remaining brick chimneys of a burned and bombed building. The ruins are surrounded by trees, grass, and wild flowers. A horse rests in the center of the photo and a man sits on a rubble wall on the right edge. Inscription on verso: "Gardner." Numeric notations on verso: "X" and "780."
